Sexuality and gender diversity have always existed, but societies have responded to them in vastly different ways, with persecution, tolerance, or celebration. The articles under this tag examine the historical, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of LGBTQ+ existence, oppression, and advocacy across religious traditions, empires, and modern nation-states.
My focus is not only on tracing suffering and injustice, such as the persecution under Christian doctrine, Roman law, or the Nazi regime, but also on recovering overlooked narratives of resilience, compassion, and early rights movements. From Buddhist inclusivity to Magnus Hirschfeld’s pioneering activism, this tag aims to critically illuminate how LGBTQ+ lives have been shaped by, and in turn shaped, broader cultural and historical forces.
