Tea is more than a beverage — it is a cultural practice, an aesthetic expression, and a medium of philosophical and social exchange. From its early uses in ancient China as medicine and ritual offering, tea evolved into a refined art form that shaped entire cultural traditions. Whether in the contemplative atmosphere of the Japanese tea ceremony, the communal hospitality of Middle Eastern tea culture, or the vibrant street chai of India, tea reflects regional values, rituals, and worldviews.
In my explorations so far, I’ve touched on the aesthetics surrounding tea, particularly through East Asian ceramic traditions and philosophical ideals like wabi-sabi and kintsugi. But my interest goes further: I aim to investigate tea’s historical spread along trade routes, its spiritual symbolism in Zen and Daoist contexts, its role in colonial entanglements, and its continued cultural significance today — from meditative practice to political resistance. Tea is not only steeped in water, but in meaning.
