Sri Lanka has played a pivotal role in preserving and shaping the Buddhist tradition since its earliest days. As one of the first regions outside the Indian subcontinent to embrace Buddhism, the island became a major center of Theravāda thought, monastic scholarship, and sacred architecture. Sites like Anurādhapura and Polonnaruwa stand as enduring testaments to a civilization where kingship, religion, and urban life were deeply intertwined.

In my posts, I examine how Sri Lankan culture reflects the long continuity of Buddhist values — from ancient stūpas and cave temples to the literary transmission of the Jātakas in Pāli. I’m particularly interested in how the island’s historical and mythological imagination helped sustain and adapt Buddhism through time, and how modern voices in Sri Lanka continue to engage the tradition in socially conscious and globally connected ways.
