Myanmar’s cultural history is deeply intertwined with the development and transmission of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. From the early kingdoms centered at Bagan to later regional successor states, Myanmar has been a major center of Theravāda tradition, monastic scholarship, and sacred architecture. The monumental temples and stūpas of Bagan, along with inscriptions and artistic relics, testify to a long-standing synthesis of political authority and religious patronage.

My focus on Myanmar explores how its cultural identity has been shaped by Buddhist values, mythologies, and institutions — from local guardian deities (Dharmapālas, Yakṣas, Nāgas) to transregional philosophical currents. I also reflect on how colonial encounters, post-Bagan transformations, and global rediscovery have contributed to a renewed interest in Myanmar’s religious and historical significance.
